"THE ROAD TO HEAVEN IS PAVED ANYWAY YOU LIKE" is the igniting, repetitious,
and upbeat jazz induced phrase that prepares the audience for a questionable ride.
Complete with vivid candor, a stunning version of charades is interpreted by the
dancers, while shouted letters form an acronymic chorus of introduction.
The set is astonishing yet simplistic, replicating a church pulpit, embellished with
sleek, florescent projected images on the floor and walls. Clearly, it's as if the
repertoire is under moral scrutiny from the participating audience members
strategically placed inside the surrounding pews. Instantly, one cannot help but
brace themselves for the enigmatic events to follow.
"Chapel / Chapter" is a morose tale of morality and conscience subsequently
injected with self examining politics and issues of humanity. It describes a
scenario of a convicted murderer and the retrospection of mortal thoughts,
reenacting the events that lead to the fateful demise of an innocent family.
The dancers' flawless and flexible movement synergized with the malleability of
one's heart and mind, expressing justification and coping with regret. The piece
utterly dives into exploration of deliverance and salvation, causing us to identify our
own deep shortcomings and idiosyncrasies.
Carefully syncopated and poetic, Jones uses thought provoking monologues and
beautiful operatic nuances coupled with jazzy rhythm and blues to paint this brilliant
moving portrait of soul search. "Chapel / Chapter" is nothing short of incredible,
giving reference to what appears at times to be a spiritual, musical interpretation of
Law & Order or CSI. In a sensationalist world, this version of soul interrogation
proves worthy of further exploration. To no surprise, Bill T. Jones does it again.
