Chrisette Michele’s family is full of clergy. She
led a gospel choir in high school and college
and wasn’t even allowed to buy CDs or watch
MTV. Now she writes songs for hip-hop moguls
Nas and Jay-Z.
It wasn’t until she was exposed to jazz artists
Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday
in high school that Michele was inspired to
major in music at Five Towns College. Soon she
was opening for India.Arie and eventually inked
a recording contract with Island Def Jam.
Her own forthcoming album deals with self-esteem,
relationships and abstinence. “I don’t
want to come off preachy, but I’m not afraid to
be a Christian in this industry and to really believe
what I believe in,” she told Billboard.com.
