Our Chat With Ito Aghayere: Chief Resident In CBS New Medical Comedy, “Carol’s Second Act”

Ito with cast. Carols Second Act

Black Girls Rock. We know that. CBS knows it too. We love that they’ve casted Ito Aghayere, (a Nigerian, Canadian, American born in Alberta, Canada), as chief resident Dr. Maya Jacobs in their new TV show, “Carol’s Second Act”.

This isn’t Ito’s first rodeo. She was also cast in Logan Lucky (2017), Blacklist (2017), and Elementary (2016). She graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and received her Master of Fine Arts after graduating from Columbia University.

Here’s the rundown of the show. At age 50, Carol Kenney (Patricia Heaton) has raised her children, gotten divorced and retired from teaching. Instead of kicking up her heels and taking a well-earned break, she decides it’s time to start over, committing to the pursuit of her dream of becoming a doctor. As the oldest medical intern — by a lot — she must sink or swim with peers who are half her age. Luckily for her, her enthusiasm, perspective and even her age may be exactly what makes her second act a great success. Carol will need to win over their chief resident, Dr. Maya Jacobs, an all-business disciplinarian who doesn’t care for Carol’s chatty, outgoing nature.

I had a chance to speak with Ito recently about her role, and the fact that it’s not often we see ourselves on screen as physicians. We’re definitly out there in huge numbers. Glad to see CBS feature us in this light.

“Carol’s Second Act” premieres on CBS Thursday, Sept. 26th at 9:30pm EST.
