Recently I was invited by STXfilms to screen an adorable film that just may change the culture regarding embracing the differences of others. Most children, including myself, always wanted the “pretty” doll. But what happens to ugly dolls?? The film gives us one theory…
In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weirdness is celebrated, strangeness is special and beauty is embraced as more than meets the eye.
After traveling to the other side of a mountain, Moxy (Janelle Monáe) and her UglyDoll friends discover Perfection — a town where more conventional dolls receive training before entering the real world to find the love of a child. Soon, the UglyDolls learn what it means to be different — ultimately realizing that they don’t have to be perfect to be amazing.
The film stars Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton, Pitbull, Emma Roberts, Gabriel Iglesias, Wanda Sykes, Leehom Wang, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha.
In my exclusive one-on-one with Janelle Monae, she reveals how as a child she wish she would have had resources like this film to teach how to deal with issues like being bullied. Listen to our interview below.
I also chatted with the director of UglyDolls, Kelly Asbury. He tells the secrets of how they shot the film without the actors physically being in the same place. He also gave tips to aspiring directors. Get your notebooks out! Listen below.
UglyDolls hits theaters May 3, 2019. Take the entire family and make it a teachable moment. The adults just might learn a thing or 10 as well!
