Last night, we were invited to attend an exclusive red carpet screening of ‘Brian Banks’ at SCADshow on behalf of ESSENCE, Bleecker Street and Liquid Soul.
The experience featured an exciting red carpet with Sherri Shepherd, the real, ‘Brian Banks‘ cast members, VIP celebrity friends, a full screening of the film and an insightful Q&A moderated by ESSENCE Entertainment Director, Cori Murray.
The inspirational true story of Brian Banks (Aldis Hodge), an All-American high school football star, committed to USC, who finds his life upended when he is wrongly convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. Despite lack of evidence, Banks is railroaded through a broken justice system and sentenced to a decade of prison and probation. Years later, with the support of Justin Brooks (Greg Kinnear) and the California Innocence Project, Banks fights to reclaim his life and fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL.
Just as with “When They See Us’, it’s important everyone supports this film, especially young men of color. The film is a tear-jerker, but teaches lessons about faith, forgiveness, perserverance, and shows how broken the justice system is.
Again, we MUST support the film with our dollars. Our support proves to Hollywood that we want to see more quality films with similiar subject matters. When films like this are made, lives change and the truth is revealed. That’s the power of filmmaking.
Brian Banks opens in theatres August 9th. Buy out a theatre, find as many young men of color you can find and use the film as a teaching tool.
